I wonder if eating so many cashews is healthy. There are so many chemicals in growing cashews. I personally think it would be better to have dairy in small portions than so many cashews. Honestly is it better to have so any cashews than soya milk? It seems these days everything vegan that is trying to copy ‘dairy foods’, be it sweets or savory is all about cashews. I was always under the impression this was not a safe nut to eat in large portions. Just like Soy, cashews are big at the moment and in a few years we will be reading articles on the harm of cashews and we are now reading about soy.
You certainly bring up a valid point, Mary. Too much of anything isn’t going to be healthful – we don’t want to be overly reliant on any single thing, except for water. We’ve tried to share dairy-free cheese recipes with a range of different nuts and seeds for variety and choice. For people who are intolerant or allergic to dairy, nut cheese can be a lovely treat!
Thank you for all these dairy-free cheese recipes! My son needs to follow a low iodine diet for two weeks, (for a medical test), and can not have any dairy or tofu. These nut-based recipes are great!
Aside from the fermented cheeses are there any alternatives to nutritional yeast and miso in the vegan cheese recipes? My husband has a yeast sensitivity. Despite people claiming otherwise, yeast of any variety will still induce reactions in those with a sensitivity.
Hi Kathleen! There really isn’t a direct substitution for nutritional yeast that would have the same flavour. If your husband is sensitive, you could simply leave it out as most of these recipes have lots of herbs, spices and other elements that add flavour. You could try adding lemon juice or apple cider vinegar for a bit of tang, though that wouldn’t be ‘cheesy’ per se. Also, there are some recipes here that don’t use nutritional yeast at all – for example the queso and the everything bagel cream cheese, and a couple of others.
