In 2014 our Culinary Nutrition Experts attempted an experiment: we wondered what would happen if we used our recipes to not only spread deliciousness among our friends, families and clients, but to also raise money for a good cause.
The result? We sold hundreds of copies of our first charity e-cookbook From Scratch and raised $10,000 for Charity: Water and Organics4Orphans, a not-for-profit organization that works to educate communities in East Africa about how they can grow their own sustainable, organic food. These funds trained a community leader, brought wells to three communities and fed over 200 orphans with fresh, organic food.
At the Academy of Culinary Nutrition, we aim to share the fundamental importance of how food and culinary skills can transform our health and the health of the world. When we combine this knowledge with the creativity of our students, that’s when the magic in the kitchen happens. Giving is a big part of the plan.
Since the program began online in 2013, we’ve had more than 500 students in 25 countries come through our virtual ‘doors’ to get certified in nutrition training for life. Our students and grads have an incredible passion for creating health-building recipes using the best possible ingredients.
Yet we have a rare luxury that most people on the planet do not. We are able to choose the food we use to fuel our cells and our lives. And we want people around the world to have the same choices.
That’s why we put our heads together to create an entirely new 2015 From Scratch Cookbook for a different cause. Thirty-five culinary nutrition experts generously donated their delicious recipes – which are gluten-free and plant-based – to support a capacity-building non-profit.
This year, 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Kiva, a lending program that helps people around the world kickstart their own businesses, which empowers them to take control of their lives and create their own opportunities (yes!). What we love about Kiva is that the money keeps on giving: the people who take loans are expected to pay them back over time, allowing the money to then go and support more people who need it. This is truly a giving project that keeps on giving.
